Episode 49.5: Reunited in London! (Bonus Episode)

If Andrea and Stefin sound particularly giddy in this short and sweet bonus episode, it’s because they’re together again in jolly old England. In a Preheated first, they’re recording together in the same room, and that room happens to be in London! In between sightseeing trips to London’s fabulous Borough Market, bookstores, tearooms and shops, they hope to have at least a little time for baking.

One thing they won’t be tackling is homemade caramel sauce. Despite following instructions, Stefin’s first batch burnt to a crisp in less than a minute, unleashing the full might of British smoke detectors and taking years off her life. The second batch was cooked properly but immediately cracked like hard candy when she poured it on ice cream. (Chemists/home cooks: What’s going on?) To reassure herself she wasn’t going crazy, she whipped up a batch from her beloved Classic Home Desserts cookbook that turned out ace (British slang for awesome, brilliant, excellent, etc.).

Listeners: Do you have a foolproof homemade caramel sauce recipe?

It’s almost Halloween and time for some spooktacular sweets. Stefin tells Andrea about a new dessert decorating trend — galaxy desserts — and shares a recipe from her favorite U.K. grocery store, Waitrose — Poached Pear Ghosties.  Finally, the duo each award a coveted Blue Ribbon to their favorite treat from October. Stefin chooses the Amish Apple Dumpling from Episode 46, if only for the pastry she’s now obsessed with, and Andrea goes with the Valencia Orange Cake she challenged herself to in Episode 48.
