Episode 68: Hot-Buttered Yum!

Andrea encounters a new berry from Colombia in her local market — the goldenberry. Far from being a villain in the new James Bond film, it’s a small, sweet-tart berry that looks a little like a wrinkled yellow grape tomato and can be used in citrus desserts like lemon bars. In the UK it’s known by its Latin name, physalis, and Stefin has eaten them as a garnish on cocktails. (Though she didn’t know it at the time she recorded this episode!)

Stefin shares a UK study that shows that folks who make homemade bread are less anxious and stressed. Whether it’s the patience involved in letting dough rise, the kneading process, or the wonderful aroma of freshly baked bread, your Preheated hosts are happy to contribute to mental health during Bread Month!

Listeners: What is it about making bread that relaxes you?

Andrea reminds listeners that there’s still time to read the March Preheated Book Club pick: Sourdough by Robin Sloan. Pick up a copy and join in the review on Episode 69.

Next up is the review of King Arthur Flour’s Hot-Buttered Soft Pretzels. Both hosts loved this “ethereal” shaped bread, so much so that Stefin warns listeners they won’t want to be alone when they take a batch out of the oven. Andrea agrees, and notes that King Arthur Flour parchment called for in this recipe really does seem superior to other brands. She’s also interested in purchasing some pretzels salt for her next batch. But, though she loved this recipe, she’s a little unsure why her dough puffed beyond the classic “pretzel” shape. Any thoughts Preheaters?

The duo introduce their next bake-along, a return to the sweet side, with Monkey Bread from Sally’s Baking Addiction. Though this pull-apart cinnamon roll is a popular choice at potlucks, office parties and other gatherings, neither host have made their own. Get out your bundt, plan ahead for the overnight rise, and get ready for some monkeying around!

Finally, the Globetrotting Gourmet travels to Finland where Stefin encounters a plethora of new-to-her berries, including bilberries and cloudberries, as well as a hot-cheese dessert, and a bread made using leftover breakfast porridge.
