Grasshopper Pie

Episode 187: No-Bake Grasshopper Pie

Andrea’s lack of detailed recipe reading resulted in a rare Midwest Made mishap while whipping up an Italian Loaf. The instructions called for a 30 minute first rise, followed by a three hour second rise (in the refrigerator!) and then a 20 minute rest before baking. Sadly, Andrea missed the refrigerator instruction, and after rising for three hours in her warm kitchen, Andrea’s dough was definitely over-proofed.

Listeners, do you have any tricks for rescuing over-proofed dough?

Meanwhile, Stefin’s excited about what’s on top of her summer reading stack: Pride and Pudding: The History of British Puddings, Savory and Sweet by Regula Ysewijn. Stay tuned this fall for lots of fun and fascinating food history!

Recipe Review: No-Bake Grasshopper Pie from The Spruce Eats

Both hosts went rogue on this classic American frozen pie, with mixed results. Stefin added melted chocolate to her crust, while Andrea subbed Anna’s Swedish Ginger Thins for the chocolate digestives in the crust. Neither host used a springform pan, preferring a deep-dish pie pan. Andrea’s family and neighbors loved her flavor experiment, while Stefin is going back to the drawing board to find the chocolate/mint combo she and her family were craving.

Want to try another variation of this classic? Here’s Listener Craig’s mom’s recipe. Many thanks to Donna Weaver!

Leftover crème de menthe? Try a classic Grasshopper cocktail! This bright green, chocolate-mint riff on a classic martini was created in New Orleans in 1918.

This Week’s Bake Along: Almond Granita from Saveur
