Episode 201: Fall Kitchen Catch-Up

The Preheated hosts reunite behind their microphones for the first time since October 2020, and there’s a lot to catch up on! Stefin’s still in London, cooking (with gas) in a new kitchen in between homework assignments for her master’s degree in creative writing. In Olympia, Andrea is working full-time as a recruiter and taking deep breaths as her daughter becomes a licensed driver.

Recent Successes and Failures

Andrea enjoyed using her Big Green Egg barbecue to keep her cool during the intense heat of summertime. She says grilling fruit, especially peaches, was a huge win. Not so much of a success: A Lemon Upside Down Cake that didn’t take well to being “baked” on an open fire. Inside, she’s enjoyed making interactive Fruit Fools, and she’s become a bit obsessed with muffins, giving particular thumbs up to Smitten Kitchen’s Perfect Blueberry Muffins.

Stefin finally got around to making Nigella’s Sticky Toffee Pudding. Though a bit fiddly with timing, the only real fail was the fact that it made enough to feed a crowd … and there was no crowd. Other revelations have been The View From Great Island’s Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter Muffins, and Christa Menegas’ novel Paris Every Moment in which nutmeg toxicity (see Episode 17) becomes a plot twist!

Looking Forward to Fall Baking

Andrea’s excited about firing up her oven for loaves of pumpkin bread after a particularly delicious recipe from her husband’s co-worker caught her attention … and caused some confusion. She’s also ready for Thanksgiving pies, and she’s taking orders in the Olympia area!

Stefin is hosting her book club in person for the first time in more than two years and needs a refresher on quantities for a crowd … is a spread featuring Jalapeño Cheddar Scones, Sheila Lukin’s Zucchini Lemon Loaf;* Pumpkin Scones, Mincemeat Banana Bread and the Pumpkin Bundt Cake from Episode 2 too much?

*Sadly this recipe isn’t available online. It’s from Sheila’s wonderful USA Cookbook, one of Stefin’s favorites.

  1. OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!

SO HAPPY TO HAVE YOU BACK!! 🙂 🙂 🙂 <3

  2. I was SHOCKED when I awoke Monday morning to find a new episode. I cannot tell you how uncanny the timing was. I had been longing to have you two back in my life again and had just started binge listening to the podcast series again. I had gotten to season two and thought I must have had some magical powers and somehow, through some podcast listener power, summoned you two to start podcasting again. LOL…it was such a delight two get a recap from my two dear friends. I realize that it was a sporadic episode so I will venture on and continue to make my ways back through the archives…oh, did I not mention that this is my third time binge listening….it’s possible I have issues 🙂

  3. It was good to hear you two again. Hope you do this again, maybe once a month? Glad you are both doing so well. I will be baking the two layer pie for Thanksgiving again this year. And, hooray! I get to share it with family instead of eating alone over zoom. Had hoped to be in my newly renovated home, but alas, not quite done yet. So I’ll still be hand washing the dishes.
