Episode 183: Black Sesame Cookies

Stefin and Andrea are thrilled with the activity in the Facebook Listeners Group and want to encourage everyone to participate — you don’t need to wait for a bake along! Andrea thought she could bake a fruit crisp by memory but she may have forgotten an ingredient or two. Luckily, it still turned out nicely.

Recipe Review: Black Sesame Cookies from JustOneCookbook

In Olympia, this buttery, nutty, delicious cookie almost got derailed when Andrea forgot to add the black sesame seeds. Luckily she realized after rolling her cookies that they didn’t look quite right, and she inserted the seeds post-roll, which is why you’ll see wide swathes of dough without sesame seeds. Stefin loved how Nami wrote this recipe, and wanted to acknowledge what a joy it is to bake with a well-written recipe. Andrea made a major modification when she couldn’t get her shortbread to turn into a ball, so she added 1/2 stick (4 Tbsp.) of butter. Stefin wisely added just a scant tablespoon of water to get her dough to come together, and that worked perfectly. Both hosts and their families absolutely loved this delicate and beautiful cookie.

June’s Blue Ribbon Winners

Japanese Sweets month had four contenders for the blue ribbon:

Bonus Blue Ribbon (episode listed is review episode)

Andrea awarded her Blue Ribbon to the Shokupan from Episode 180 while Stefin awarded hers to the Black Sesame Cookies from today’s episode! What a fun month of exploration and discovery.
