Episode 118: Literary Bakes

The only thing Stefin and Andrea love more than a good bake is a good book, so they could not be more excited to kick off listener-suggested Literary Bakes month! Stefin introduces the Preheated Book Club pick for April, Pacific Northwest chef Greg Atkinson’s memoir At the Kitchen Table. (Read along! They’ll discuss in Episode 121.) Need another foodie read this month? Andrea also recommends Ruth Reichl’s fictional debut, Delicious!

This Week’s Bake Along: Sausage Rolls from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire via Little Library Café

Kicking things off, the first bookish bake is straight out of Hogwarts: Sausage Rolls, inspired by a party scene in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling. The recipe comes from the charming blog Little Library Café. Andrea has successfully made delicious Lamb and Harissa Sausage Rolls before, but this will be Stefin’s first attempt, despite their prevalence in her adopted country. Stefin is looking forward to using homemade puff pastry from the duo’s recent class at London’s Bread Ahead, while Andrea will rely on a high-quality store-bought version. You could also use a homemade rough puff pastry here. (Listen to Episode 113 for more info on that particular pastry.)

Grocery Store Escapade!

Could there be treasures in plain sight at your local grocery store? Andrea and Stefin challenge each other to slow down and find three items they’ve never seen before while on a shopping run. Andrea completed this challenge at the London Whole Foods, and Stefin haunted the aisles at Waitrose and a local hardware store. Andrea discovered date syrup, a popular condiment in Middle Eastern cooking (and another entry into the 2019 baking trend of alternative sweeteners); passion fruit powder (perfect for an upcoming spring bake along); and a large quantity of reusable silicone bread liners. (Why so many if they’re reusable?)

Stefin discovered feuilletine, which, despite its name, is not a high-performance gasoline additive, but rather a crunchy, sweet topping for finishing desserts; goats’ milk butter (which Andrea reports is delightful); and a gadget she can only describe as what might happen if a jelly roll pan and a waffle iron had a baby.

Who knows what kind of pan this is?

Wherever in the world you shop, there’s likely a whole host of fun items awaiting you if you stop to take a look.

Listeners: What fun finds are in your grocery aisles?
