Episode 127: Completely Corny

It’s the first week of Completely Corny month, a theme suggested by Stefin’s husband, and heartily endorsed by Andrea’s (Happy Father’s Day, guys!). Whether you’re looking for caramel corn, a pound cake or even ice cream, this month will be full of some a-maizing treats, all with the signature ingredient.

But first: your hosts (and brunch lovers) debate the tantalizing idea of breakfast appetizers, as tweeted by Jill Lightner (Andrea loves her cookbook Scraps, Peels and Stems).

Listeners: Do you order breakfast appetizers when dining out? If so, what’s popular?

Need some early summer baking inspiration? Look no further than the Preheated Facebook page! Listener Sarah made an impressive brunch tea featuring chocolate granola cups and Life Changing Crackers from Episode 124; Laurin is loving Raspberry and Chocolate Chunk Cookies; and Maggie tackled the Mexican sweet bread pan dulce conchas. If that wasn’t enough, not one but two Heathers shared pics recently: Heather #1 tackled deep-frying with her daughters and made donuts; and Heather #2 made embossed sugar cookies with the cutest Preheated helpers ever! We love to see what you’re baking up so keep those posts coming!

This Week’s Bake Along: Berry Long Cake with Ginger Crumb from Julie Richardson’s Vintage Cakes

Your hosts are excited for their first “corny” bake of the month — Berry Long Cake with Ginger Crumb from Julie Richardson’s Vintage Cakes cookbook. Featuring a vanilla cake base topped with a fruit layer and sprinkled with a gingery crumble topping, this looks to be a perfect seasonal treat. Stefin may use cherry bounce in her fruit layer, and Andrea will reach for her vanilla sugar.

Note: Take care when testing for doneness on this cake. Reviews have suggested a “toothpick test” isn’t reliable because of that buttery crumble topping.

Grab your local berries, candied ginger and, of course, our star ingredient, cornmeal, and bake along with us.

Now in Season: Fresh and Fabulous

And speaking of what’s in season, the hosts have a worldwide rundown of fresh produce in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, as well as a call-back to recipes to make the most of it from past shows.

Listeners in the Southern Hemisphere may consider recipes from April 2018’s Crazy for Citrus month, and those in the Northern Hemisphere can find inspiration in last September’s Stone Fruit month.
